Uakti (pronounced WAHK-chee) is a Brazilian instrumental musical group formed in 1978, consisting of Marco Antônio Guimarães, Artur Andrés Ribeiro, Paulo Sérgio Santos, and Décio Ramos. The group is renowned for its use of custom-made instruments, which are crafted by the members themselves. Marco Antônio Guimarães, the group's leader, studied music at the Universidade Federal da Bahia in Salvador, where he developed a passion for instrument construction under the guidance of Walter Smetak. Following his studies, he played cello with the São Paulo and Minas Gerais symphony orchestras while also building various instruments from PVC, wood, and metal in his home. To bring together musicians to play these unique instruments, Guimarães invited colleagues from the Orquestra Sinfônica de Belo Horizonte to collaborate at the Foundation for Artistic Education of Belo Horizonte. Among the musicians were percussionists Paulo Sérgio Santos and Décio de Souza Ramos, flutist Artur Andrés Ribeiro, and cellist Cláudio Luz do Val. Although Guimarães serves as the principal composer and arranger, all members actively contribute their own compositions to the group.
