The UK Subs is a punk rock band that originated from the London scene at The Roxy in 1977, founded by lead vocalist Charlie Harper. Initially formed in 1976 as "The Subversives," the band evolved into "U.K. Subs" with a lineup that included guitarist Nicky Garratt, bassist Paul Slack, and various drummers. Their sound, characterized by Harper's growling Cockney vocals, combined punk stylings with strong R&B influences, reminiscent of bands like Sham 69 and The Angelic Upstarts, albeit without a skinhead following. Though they never achieved major hits, several singles reached the lower end of the Top 30 in the late 1970s, including "Stranglehold," "Tomorrow's Girls," a cover of The Zombies' "She's Not There," and "Warhead." Their first two studio albums, "Another Kind of Blues" and "Brand New Age," also charted in the lower reaches of the album charts. In 1983, Nicky Garratt, along with bassist Alvin Gibbs and drummer Kim Wylie, left the band, prompting Charlie Harper to recruit a new lineup. Garratt would return intermittently over the next 25 years, while Harper continued to tour and record with a frequently changing lineup. Notably, the UK Subs are recognized for being the only band to have recorded an album for every letter of the alphabet in order, culminating with "Ziezo" in 2016.
