Ultra-red is a Los Angeles-based collective founded in 1994 by two AIDS activists, who have since expanded to include a diverse group of activists and organizers from various social movements. Known for their innovative blend of political commitment and sound art, Ultra-red has spent over a decade engaging in a dynamic exchange between art and political organizing. Their work includes radio broadcasts, performances, recordings, installations, and public space occupations. The collective has explored various urban themes such as needle exchange, public sex, public housing, resistance to global capital, labor, and education. With a focus on two aesthetic-political objectives—examining acoustic space as reflective of social relations and radicalizing electro-acoustic art conventions—Ultra-red has established partnerships with community organizations like the Union de Vecinos in East Los Angeles and Ballymun Women's Resource Centre in Dublin, among others. In 2004, on their tenth anniversary, Ultra-red restructured into an aesthetic-political organization, allowing for a broader range of projects and collaborations. The collective has launched Public Record, an online archive for fair-use audio, text, image, and video documents, to showcase projects resulting from alliances with various artists and organizations. Current members include Elizabeth Blaney, Pablo Garcia, Leonardo Vilchis, and new additions such as Manuela Bojadzijev, Janna Graham, Elliot Perkins, Robert Sember, and Ceren Tuerkman.
