Universal Indicator is an acid house collective formed in response to the decline of many Chicago house masters, as trance and progressive music became the dominant genres in DJing and production. The group was inspired by various producers and aimed to create records that they themselves would want to buy, rather than focusing on big names or catchy titles. Although not all contributors are well-known, James performs under the alias Martin Tressider, and Dred uses an undisclosed alias. Universal Indicator released four limited records on Rephlex, titled Red, Yellow, Blue, and Green, with Dred believed to have produced Blue and Yellow, while James likely produced Red and Green.
