Ursula Rucker is an American poet and activist, born and raised in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She graduated from Temple University’s journalism program and began writing poetry in her adolescence, keeping her work private until her debut performance in 1994 at Zanzibar Blue in Philadelphia. That same year, Rucker collaborated with various artists and producers, including Wax Tailor, King Britt, 4hero, Jamaaladeen Tacuma, Josh Wink, Alix Perez, and notably, The Roots. Her collaboration with The Roots on the track "The Unlocking" led to further contributions to their albums, including "Illadelph Halflife" and the certified gold record "Things Fall Apart." Rucker is known for her unique poetry techniques and powerful stage presence, characterized as "strong, vulnerable, wounded and raging." She was recognized by King Britt, who invited her to create her first spoken-word recording, the 1994 club hit "Supernatural." Additionally, Rucker appears in the 2008 film "The Black Candle," directed by M.K. Asante, Jr. and narrated by Maya Angelou.
