Usha Uthup, affectionately known as Didi, was born in independent India to parents from Madras and Kerala and grew up in Mumbai. She began her professional singing career in 1969, which played a crucial role in changing the perception of singing in nightclubs in India. Usha sings in over thirteen Indian languages and eight foreign languages. She is also the sister of several individuals.
