Ut is a radical rock group founded in New York City in December 1978 by Nina Canal, Jacqui Ham, and Sally Young. Emerging from the downtown No Wave scene, they are known for their unique fusion of rock, free jazz, and avant-garde elements. Ut was created to challenge the constraints of conventional rock music, with songs developed through collective improvisation. Each member plays all instruments and takes turns as singer/director, leading to lengthy discussions on stage between songs, which contributed to their international reputation in the 1980s. After a hiatus from 1991 to 2010, Ut has returned for live performances. Described as a "true threatening guitar band," their raw power and drive are unmistakable.
