Valentina Goncharova (b. Kyiv 1953) is a historically informed violin player, prize-winning street musician, new age experimentalist, and chamber ensemble performer. Her career reflects the broader new music movement of the 20th century and the rise of home recording technologies. Valentina spent her youth immersed in classical music study under Soviet rule, first in Kyiv and later in Leningrad from the age of 16. She studied concert violin under professors M. Vayman and B. Gutnikov, developing alternate playing styles alongside skilled pianists. A student at the Leningrad conservatoire from 1969 to 1983, her repertoire initially focused on violin music before expanding to contemporary music composition. During this time, she was also intrigued by the improvisatory nature of free jazz and emerging experimental rock circles, briefly performing in underground rock clubs with future members of the industrial group Pop-Mechanika.
