Van Halen was an American hard rock band formed in Pasadena, California, in 1974 by Dutch-American brothers Eddie and Alex Van Halen. Originally a trio called "Genesis," then "Mammoth," they were formed in 1972 with Eddie on guitar and lead vocals, Alex on drums, and Mark Stone on bass. The band was renamed "Van Halen" by David Lee Roth, who joined in 1973 after Mammoth rented a PA system from him. Michael Anthony replaced Stone on bass, and the band recorded its first demo in 1976 with Gene Simmons of Kiss. They signed with Warner Bros. in 1977, releasing their debut album in 1978. From 1974 until 1985, the lineup included the Van Halens, Roth, and Anthony. After Roth left to pursue a solo career in 1985, former Montrose lead vocalist Sammy Hagar joined, leading to four albums over 11 years. Gary Cherone, the former frontman of Extreme, replaced Hagar in 1996 but left in 1999. Van Halen went on hiatus until reuniting with Hagar in 2003 for a tour in 2004. Hagar departed in 2005, and in 2006, Roth returned, with Anthony replaced by Eddie's son, Wolfgang Van Halen. The band's final studio album was released in 2012, marking Roth's return after 28 years and featuring Wolfgang.
