Van Kaye + Ignit is a Dutch electronic music duo formed in Arnhem in the early 1980s, consisting of Ed Van Kasteren (Van Kaye) and Ignatine Bekken (Ignit). Van Kaye was previously the singer of a local new wave band called The MoNoMeN and developed an interest in electronics and rhythmic industrial patterns by the end of 1979. In April 1980, he released a demo cassette titled “A Slight Delay.” While experimenting with synthesizers, he met Ignit, who had a background in art and performance. Together, they recorded their first four songs with guest musician Williem Wisselink (Wizzkopf) in the summer of 1981, leading to the release of the “Picassos on the Wall 7” on their own Ding Dong label later that year. They subsequently worked on their debut 60-minute cassette album, “A Slight Delay,” which was self-released in 1981. The album showcases a blend of conceptual sophistication and naïveté, featuring a range of styles from new wave riffs to eerie electronics and mechanical rhythms, all recorded and mixed by Van Kaye at his home studio. Both members contribute vocals, creating a unique sound reflective of the formative years of 'bedroom' electronic music.
