Van Kaye + Ignit is a Dutch electronic music duo formed in Arnhem in the early 1980s, consisting of Ed Van Kasteren (Van Kaye) and Ignatine Bekken (Ignit). Van Kaye was previously the singer of a local new wave band called The MoNoMeN and became interested in electronics and rhythmic industrial patterns by the end of 1979. He released a demo cassette titled “A Slight Delay” in April 1980, showcasing 30 minutes of his work. During his experimentation with synthesizers, he met Ignit, who had a background in art and performance. In the summer of 1981, they recorded their first four songs with guest musician Williem Wisselink (Wizzkopf) and released the “Picassos on the Wall 7” on their own Ding Dong label later that year. They then began working on their debut cassette album, also titled “A Slight Delay,” which was self-released in 1981. The album features a blend of conceptual sophistication and naïveté, highlighting the early essence of ‘bedroom’ electronic music. Both members contribute vocals (or non-vocals), with songs incorporating new wave riffs, shifting oscillator buzzes, and eerie electronics over mechanical rhythms, all recorded and mixed by Van Kaye at his home studio using a TEAC A-3440 four-track recorder.
