Vasilisk is a musical unit formed in 1985 by Tomo Kuwabara, alongside Yukio Nagoshi and Chiaki, following the split of the political unit 'White Hospital'. They released their debut album, 'Whirling Dervishes', in 1987 through Eskimo, a label established by Yun 'Grim' Konagaya. The album featured a variety of unusual instruments, including African skin-drums, African flute, Tibetan percussions, and Ancestor's voices. In 1988, they followed up with their second album, 'Mkwaju', also released by Eskimo. After this release, Tomo and Yukio joined Rose McDowall's project Candy Cain and toured Japan throughout 1988. They were later invited by Luciano Dari to release their next album on his label, Musica Maxima Magnetica. In 1989, after their collaboration with Candy Cain, they began recording their third album, 'Acqua', in London and Naples, which was released later that year by Musica Maxima Magnetica. Upon returning from Europe, they compiled and remixed tracks from their previous albums for their debut CD release, 'Liberation and Ecstasy'. Following this, the band entered a five-year hiatus during which Tomo traveled across Asia for nearly two years in search of his identity.
