Velvet Monkeys was formed in Washington, D.C. in 1981 by guitarist/vocalist Don Fleming, keyboardist Elaine Barnes, and bassist Stephen Soles following the breakup of their previous band, Citizen 23. Drummer Jay Spiegel joined shortly thereafter. Fleming remained the group's sole constant member throughout its decade-long existence. The band released their debut album, "Everything is Right," in 1982, followed by "Future" in 1983 and "Rake" in 1990. Throughout its history, numerous musicians cycled through the Velvet Monkeys.
