**Bio: Verckys (Georges Kiamuangana Mateta)** Georges Kiamuangana Mateta, known as Verckys, was born on May 19, 1944, in Kisantu, Bas-Congo, and passed away on October 13, 2022, in Kinshasa. He adopted the name Verckys after being inspired by American saxophonist King Curtis. Verckys began his musical career in 1962 with Los Cantina, followed by Jamel Jazz, and later joined Paul Ebengo's Congo-Rock. In 1963, he became a member of OK Jazz, collaborating with musicians from Gérard Kazembe's band. As Franco's right-hand man, Verckys captivated audiences with his vibrant stage presence and flamboyant attire. However, in 1968, he took a splinter group, featuring vocalist Youlou Mabiala, into the studio, leading to a significant rift with Franco. On April 5, 1969, he left OK Jazz to establish Orchestra Vévé, initially featuring singers Bovic Bondo, Marcel Loko Massengo (Djeskain), Sinatra Bonga Tsekabu (Saak Saakul), and Mario Matadidi. Verckys' music showcased a more stripped-down sound compared to OK Jazz, allowing for expressive sax solos.
