Vía Libre is a pop/rock band from Costa Rica that was formed in 1973 and disbanded in 1984. The band originated when five teenagers, aged 17 to 23, took the stage at the First Intercollegiate Song Festival at La Salle School in San José. The founder, Fernando Castro Sandí, who was the bassist and a ballad singer for Paco Navarrete's group, sought the support of businessman Carlos Lachner, owner of Radio Mil, a station known for its romantic music. In 1997, the band revived with Fernando Castro Sandí, the original lead vocalist, joining forces with his three sons, Fernando, Andrés, and Daniel, to revisit classic Vía Libre songs and introduce new material, performing hits from the 70s and 80s.
