Victoria Shen is an experimental music performer, sound artist, and instrument-maker based in San Francisco. Her sound practice explores the spatiality and physicality of sound in relation to the human body, creating music that acts as a form of sculpture. Shen utilizes analog modular synthesizers (Flower Electronics), amplified objects, and self-built electronics to reproduce chaotic systems sensitive to small changes in their parameters, resulting in music characterized by extreme textures and gestural tones rather than conventional harmony and rhythm. In addition to her audio work, Shen produces live video performances that create visual palimpsests and digital residues using software she has developed. These visuals combine real-time video with found footage, thematically linked by sexuality, violence, and art history through a process of exaggeration and effacement. Shen has performed solo across North America, Japan, Mexico, and Europe under the names Victoria Shen and Evicshen, and as part of the duo TRIM in North America and the UK. Notable venues for her performances include Boston City Hall, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, ISSUE Project Room NY, DOMMUNE Tokyo, and Petreon Sculpture Park Cyprus. She has been an artist in residence at Elektronmusikstudion EMS in Stockholm, WORM in Rotterdam, Kurimanzutto in New York, and the Sound Laboratory of The Royal Danish Academy in Copenhagen. Currently, Shen teaches at Harvard University and the School of Visual Arts in New York.
