Victrola was an Italian new wave band formed in 1979 in Messina. Initially a rock quartet consisting of multi-instrumentalists/vocalists Antonio Cuscinà and Carlo Smeriglio, along with bassist Tobia Squitieri and drummer Nino Belmonte, they began sending out demo tapes that led to some of their tracks appearing on compilations. In 1983, the band reduced to a duo and released their only 12" single, "Maritime Tatami/Game Of Despair." They relocated to Florence to immerse themselves in the local music scene, adopting a more stripped-down electronic sound. A compilation of their songs was issued in 1983, but after two final concerts in 1984, Victrola became inactive. Both members later performed in a 1993 production of "Jesus Christ Superstar." In the late 2000s, Victrola's music resurfaced on compilations of obscure '80s synth pop and new wave tracks, including 2009's "Danza Mecanica." In 2014, Dark Entries Editions reissued "Maritime Tatami" as part of their 12" series. Five years later, the label released "Born From The Water," a double LP of unreleased Victrola recordings and demos. In 2025, they issued a maxi-single featuring previously unreleased tracks.
