Viola Wills was an American singer born on December 30, 1939, in Watts, Los Angeles, California. She began her career as a session vocalist and was signed as a solo artist to Bronco Records in the mid-1960s. Despite recording several singles, none charted during that time. In 1969, she recorded a single for another label, which also did not achieve commercial success. Wills replaced a backup vocalist on a European tour in 1974 and recorded for a UK label shortly thereafter. In 1979, while signed to a UK label, she gained recognition with a disco version of "Gonna Get Along Without You," along with other dance hits like "If You Could Read My Mind" and "Up On The Roof," produced by notable figures in the industry. She also had a Top 40 UK hit with the double-sided single "Both Sides Now" and "Dare to Dream." One of her earlier singles played a significant role in a number one R&B hit for the group Love Unlimited in the mid-1970s. Although Wills did not achieve mainstream success in the US, her music became popular in dance clubs, with several recordings circulating among fans. Viola Wills passed away from leukemia on May 6, 2009, at 8:27 AM Pacific Time.
