Violeta Parra (born October 14, 1917, in San Carlos de Itihue, Chile) was a prominent Chilean folklorist and visual artist. She played a crucial role in the development of Nueva Canción Chilena, a movement that revitalized and reinvented Chilean folk music. Parra was instrumental in reviving the Peña, now known as La Peña de Los Parra, which served as a community center for the arts and political activism. Her most famous song, "Gracias a la Vida," gained popularity throughout Latin America and later in the United States, becoming one of the most covered Latin American songs. From 1949 to 1952, she formed a musical duo with her sister, known as "Las Hermanas Parra." She had several brothers involved in music and poetry, and she was the mother of three children, as well as the grandmother of several grandchildren. Violeta Parra tragically took her own life with a gunshot on February 5, 1967, in Santiago, due to her depression over the breakup of her relationship. Along with other key figures, she is regarded as one of the most important members of Chilean folklore history, dedicated to collecting, documenting, and exploring the origins and richness of her country's native rural music.
