Visage is a synth-pop group that emerged in 1978 from the London club Blitz, a hotspot for the New Romantic movement. Founded by Steve Strange and DJ Rusty Egan, the group sought to create music that resonated with the club's eclectic playlist, which featured artists like David Bowie, Kraftwerk, and Roxy Music. They recorded their first demo with guitarist Midge Ure, leading to their debut single, a cover of Zager & Evans' "In the Year 2525." The band expanded to include Ultravox keyboardist Billy Currie and three members of Magazine: bassist Barry Adamson, guitarist John McGeoch, and keyboardist Dave Formula. They signed with Martin Rushent's Genetic Records and released their first single, "Tar," in September 1979, followed by their self-titled debut album a year later. The album featured the hit "Fade To Grey," which became a club classic and marked the rise of synth-pop. Their second album, "The Anvil," was released in 1982, but key members Midge, John, Dave, and Billy departed in 1983. In 1984, Visage released "Beat Boy," with a new lineup including Steve Strange, Rusty Egan, Steve Barnacle, and Gary Barnacle.
