Vital Farias (January 23, 1943 – February 6, 2025) was a Brazilian singer-songwriter from Taperoá, Paraíba. He was the youngest of 14 siblings and learned to read and write with the help of his sisters. Vital lived in Taperoá until completing junior high school, after which he moved to João Pessoa, the capital of Paraíba, at the age of 18. There, he attended the Lyceu Paraibano and began self-studying guitar, later teaching guitar and music theory at the Music Conservatory of João Pessoa. In 1975, he relocated to Rio de Janeiro, where he participated in significant artistic events, including the play "Gota d'água" by Chico Buarque de Hollanda. He passed a college entrance exam for the Faculty of Music and graduated in 1981. His first recorded composition was "Ê mãe," co-written with Livardo Alves and recorded by Ari Toledo. In 1978, he released his debut album, "Vital Farias," followed by "Taperoá" two years later. In the late 1980s, Vital took a break from recording to focus on his studies. In 2002, he produced his daughter Giovanna's debut album, which featured 15 of his compositions, and released "Vital Farias live and the living dead." That same year, he was honored with the title of Citizen of Rio de Janeiro.
