Vladimir Ussachevsky (1911-1990) was a pioneering composer and educator in electronic music, known for his significant contributions at the Columbia-Princeton Electronic Music Center. Initially composing in a neo-Romantic style before 1952, he shifted to creating music primarily with electronic instruments and computers after that year. Ussachevsky was instrumental in producing the first works of "tape music," which represented a uniquely American blend of French musique concrète and German pure electronic music. In 1959, he co-founded the Columbia-Princeton Electronic Music Center with Otto Luening and directed its activities for two decades, establishing it as the leading electronic music studio in the United States.
