Vo Ese is an innovative musical project that began in 1979, initially utilizing tape loops, a vintage plastic keyboard, and an acoustic guitar played in unconventional ways. In 1980, the duo expanded their sound with the addition of a Korg MS-20 synthesizer, a Boss DR-55 drum machine, and an Electro Harmonix Deluxe Memory Man Echo. They also borrowed a real drum kit for an extended period. Their recording process involved a unique Sound-on-Sound technique using two tape decks, without a mixing board, which resulted in a distinctive sound. Influenced by a diverse range of genres, including Punk, Electropunk, New Wave, and Industrial, Vo Ese drew inspiration from artists such as Bowie, Eno, Cluster, Kraftwerk, and The Residents, among others. Over time, their methods became more complex with the acquisition of an Ibanez RM-60 mixing board and occasional use of a Teac 3440 4-track reel-to-reel. From 1979 to 1983, Vo Ese performed at their school's annual party, leaving audiences both stunned and intrigued by their unconventional music. One audience member in 1980 remarked on the uniqueness of their sound, indicating the impact of their performances. The duo continued to embrace new technology, incorporating a Roland TR-808 for more sophisticated rhythm tracks, all while operating on a limited budget.
