Voivod is a thrash metal band formed in 1982 in Jonquière, Quebec, Canada. The band draws influences from the New Wave of British Heavy Metal (NWOBHM), hardcore, and progressive rock, and is known for its distinctive sound characterized by unusual time signatures, dissonant guitar chords, and lyrics inspired by post-apocalyptic literature, Cold War politics, and science fiction. The original lineup included founding members Denis "Snake" Bélanger (vocals), Denis "Piggy" D'Amour (guitar), Jean-Yves "Blacky" Thériault (bass), and Michel "Away" Langevin (drums). After the departure of Thériault and Bélanger in the early 1990s, the band continued with D'Amour and Langevin, bringing in Eric "E-Force" Forrest on bass and vocals. Following Forrest's departure in 2001, Voivod went on hiatus for a year. The band reformed in 2002 with Bélanger returning on vocals and Jason "Jasonic" Newsted contributing bass in the studio. However, they faced another hiatus when D'Amour was diagnosed with colon cancer, which ultimately led to his passing in 2005. In 2009, Voivod released its twelfth studio album, featuring the last music written and recorded by D'Amour.
