Vybz Kartel is a Jamaican dancehall artist and entrepreneur, born on January 7, 1976, in Kingston. Growing up in Portmore, he practiced with neighborhood sound systems Soul Signal and Electric Force. In 1993, he recorded his first single "Love Fat Woman" under the name Adi Banton, inspired by one of his role models. In 1996, he formed a group with friends Mr. Lee and a singer called Escobar, naming it Vibes Cartel after a movie about Pablo Escobar. The group eventually disbanded, leading Adijah to continue his career alone while keeping the name, changing the "C" to a "K" to become Vybz Kartel. His breakthrough came in 1998 after performing at the Champions In Action stage show, where he linked up with Bounty Killer and gained public attention as his protégé. He released several hits and collaborated with various artists, eventually signing with a UK/US-based label. On April 3, 2014, Kartel was sentenced to life in prison for the murder of Clive 'Lizard' Williams in August 2011. While incarcerated, he continued to release music by recording vocals in his cell, which were then produced by an engineer.
