Wailing Souls is a Jamaican reggae vocal group originally formed in the late 1960s, featuring Winston 'Pipe' Matthews as the lead vocalist, alongside Lloyd 'Bread' McDonald and George 'Buddy' Haye. Initially known as the Renegades, this lineup recorded backing vocals for an Ernest Ranglin album before disbanding in 1968. Following the breakup, 'Pipe' and 'Bread' joined forces with Oswald Downer and Norman Davis, recording several singles for Coxsone Dodd's renowned Studio One label, while also performing under the name the Classics. In the early 1970s, the group recorded for Bob Marley's Tuff Gong label as Pipe and The Pipers. Their vocal strength and songwriting skills kept them in the limelight, leading to another lineup change in 1974 when Downer and Davis departed, and 'Buddy' Haye rejoined. The group then collaborated with the famed producer "Jo Jo" Hookim at Channel One label, and in 1977, they established their own label, Massive. By the early 1980s, the quartet, now including Rudolph ‘Garth’ Dennis from Black Uhuru, worked with prominent producers such as Sly and Robbie, "Junjo" Lawes, and Linval Thompson.
