Waldo de los Ríos was an Argentinean composer, conductor, and arranger, born on September 7, 1934, in Buenos Aires, Argentina. He passed away on March 28, 1977, in Madrid, Spain. The son of Marta Inés Gutiérrez de Vargas, he moved to the USA in 1958 and later relocated to Spain in 1962. De los Ríos is best remembered for his innovative ability to transform European classical music into pop music, notably with his 1971 update of Mozart's Symphony No. 40. His compositions were featured in the 1967 film Pampa Salvaje, earning him a prestigious award from the Argentine Cinemagraphic Association. He released the album "Mozart in the Seventies," which rearranged famous Mozart pieces in a contemporary style, prominently featuring a large percussion section. Several tracks from this album were used as theme tunes for BBC programmes of that era, including the theme for the BBC's coverage of the Horse of the Year show. Additionally, he issued "Symphonies for the Seventies," which included works from major composers like Dvořák. Waldo de los Ríos was married to journalist Isabel Pisano, who later wrote about part of his life in "El Amado Fantasma" (2002).
