Walter Schuman was an American composer known for his work in television, movies, and theater. Born on October 8, 1913, in New York City, New York, he made significant contributions to the music industry before his untimely death on August 21, 1958, in Rochester, Minnesota, at the age of 44. Schuman is best remembered for composing the iconic "Dragnet" theme and the soundtrack for the film "The Night of the Hunter" (1955). He also led a 20-member vocal group known as The Voices of Walter Schumann. As a performer, he charted once with "Ballad of Davy Crockett," reaching #14 in 1959. As a songwriter, he achieved chart success ten times between 1939 and 1988, with his highest-charting song being "Dragnet," performed by Ray Anthony and His Orchestra, which peaked at #2 in the U.S. and #7 in the U.K. Additionally, he co-wrote the #1 hit "St. George & the Dragonet" by Stan Freberg in 1953, alongside Freberg and Daws Butler. The "Dragnet" theme and its derivatives charted seven times during his career.
