Wanderley began performing and recording professionally at the age of 18, producing over 18 albums in Brazil. He gained fame in the 1960s with his band, Walter Wanderley e Seu Conjunto, and worked with João Gilberto, arranging music for Gilberto's third album. In 1965, Wanderley moved to the USA after being invited to sign with Verve Records, where he recorded his first album, "Rain Forest," featuring a Billboard Top 50 hit, "So Nice" (Summer Samba). He released several albums for Verve, collaborating with various musicians, before signing with A&M/CTI, where he recorded albums orchestrated by notable arrangers.
