Wanda Robinson, now known as Laini Mataka, is a performance poet born on November 18, 1949, in Baltimore, Maryland, USA. A contemporary of the Last Poets and Maya Angelou, she appeared poised for a successful career in poetry and music. However, after recording her work "Black Ivory," she became disillusioned with the show business industry, feeling undervalued for her contributions. As a result, she left the record business, took on various odd jobs, and continued to write. In 1972, she shaved her head and adopted the name Laini Mataka. A year later, her second album was released by Perception, but she was not involved in its production.
