War is a Latin funk group that originated in the early 1970s in Southern California, emerging from the remnants of an earlier R&B covers band called The Creators, who also recorded as The Romeos. Initially named Nightshift, they caught the attention of producer Goldstein, who helped them adopt the distinctive name War. Under his guidance, they collaborated with former Animals frontman Eric Burdon and harmonica player Levitin, leading to the recording of their first album. A double album followed in 1970, after which Burdon departed from the group. War then signed with United Artists and began releasing their own material. Although their first album did not achieve significant success, their popularity grew, culminating in their number 1 hit "Low Rider" in the mid-1970s. However, the late 1970s brought challenges, including the departure of bassist B.B. Dickerson and the tragic murder of member Charles Miller. Subsequent lineup changes affected the band's success, and they eventually became primarily a touring act. Despite these challenges, War's music has found new life as it has been heavily sampled by hip-hop artists, leading to a resurgence in interest. The band continues to tour, albeit with only one original member remaining. Four members of the classic 1970s lineup have formed a new band called Lowrider Band, but due to legal restrictions, they are unable to promote themselves as former members of War.
