Webster “Webby Jay” Johnson was a British keyboardist, best known for his work with the reggae band Matumbi. Born in the United Kingdom to Jamaican parents, he joined Matumbi in 1977 and remained with the band until its disbandment in 1982. Johnson contributed to most of their five studio albums, including their debut, "Seven Seals," released in 1978. He achieved minor success as a singer in 1979 with a cover of The Dramatics' "In The Rain." In addition to his time with Matumbi, he worked as a session musician with notable artists such as Linton Kwesi Johnson, Peter Green, and Edwin Starr. From 1991 to 1994, Johnson led a three-member group called Surkus in the Netherlands. He passed away on 17 August 2020 at the age of 67.
