Wes Montgomery was an American jazz guitarist born on March 6, 1923, in Indianapolis, Indiana. He passed away on June 15, 1968, in Indianapolis at the age of 45 due to a sudden heart attack. Known for his unique technique of using his thumb instead of a pick, Wes developed a distinctive style characterized by his trademark use of octaves in both melody and improvisation, showcasing his highly original melodic and rhythmic imagination. He was the brother of pianist and vibraphonist Monk Montgomery (1930–2009) and bassist Buddy Montgomery (1921–1982), and the uncle of guitarist and composer Wes Montgomery Jr. (1949-2024).
