Maximilian Lenz, known by his stage name WestBam, was born on March 4, 1965, in Münster, Westphalia. He is the brother of an unnamed individual. The name WestBam is an abbreviation of Westphalia BamBaataa, reflecting both his home state in Germany and his role model, Afrika Bambaataa. WestBam began his DJ career in 1983 at the Odeon Club in Münster. In 1984, he moved to Berlin, which was then still divided by the Wall. He gained fame as a DJ at the renowned Metropol in Berlin, where his sophisticated mixing techniques garnered attention beyond the city's borders. In 1985, WestBam collaborated with an unnamed artist to produce his first 12" record titled "17," inspired by Paul Hardcastle's "19." In 1986, he co-founded Low Spirit Recordings with Fabian Lenz, William Röttger, Klaus Jankuhn, and Sandra Molzahn. His first album, "The Cabinet," released in 1989, was the first DJ-concept album to be launched on the German market.
