Maximilian Lenz, known by his stage name Westbam, was born on March 4, 1965, in Münster, Westphalia. He is the brother of an unspecified individual. The name WestBam is an abbreviation of Westphalia BamBaataa, reflecting his home state and his influence from the artist Afrika Bambaataa. Westbam began his DJ career in 1983 at the Odeon Club in Münster. In 1984, he relocated to Berlin, which was still divided by the Wall, and started DJing at the renowned Metropol club. His innovative mixing techniques quickly earned him recognition beyond the city's borders. In 1985, he collaborated with an unnamed artist to produce his first 12" record titled "17," inspired by Paul Hardcastle's "19." The following year, in 1986, he co-founded Low Spirit Recordings with Fabian Lenz, William Röttger, Klaus Jankuhn, and Sandra Molzahn. In 1989, Westbam released his first album, "The Cabinet," which was notable for being the first DJ-concept album launched on the German market.
