Whitehouse was a Noise band formed in London in 1980, known for their worldwide underground cult following. The group released nine albums during their first phase, along with two related albums under different names. A close collaborator contributed to most of these records. After releasing their 1985 album, the project was put on hold. In the late '80s, Whitehouse reformed with a writer as a main member and released three albums in the early '90s, with production by another collaborator. The original member returned to the band, and the lineup of Bennett, Sotos, and Best released five albums in the following years, culminating in their final album in 2003, which is regarded as their most significant work. Sotos left after this recording. Bennett and Best continued to work together, releasing albums in 2006 and 2007, before Best departed in 2008. After a series of live performances, Bennett concluded Whitehouse in 2009.
