Wilburn Burchette was an American musician born in 1939 in California. He was a self-taught guitarist and synthesizer player, as well as a "mail order mystic." His fascination with the occult began at the age of 12, leading him to read extensively about Tibetan mysticism while practicing guitar. Burchette taught classical guitar and later constructed an Impro guitar using six different types of wood, with mahogany as the base and inlaid with abalone shells. Between 1971 and 1977, he released seven albums of guitar and synthesizer music through his Burchette Brothers label, which he ran with his brother Kenneth, a chemist. He advertised these albums in mail order ads in publications like Fate Magazine, Beyond Reality, and Gnostica News. Alongside his music, he offered a seven-part, block-printed “Psychic Meditation Course” designed to teach people how to listen to music, featuring his instrumental records with hand-drawn cover designs and listening instructions. In 1977, Burchette abruptly discarded all his musical works. He was found dead in 2023 at the age of 84 in El Cajon, California, in the home he shared with his brother Kenneth, who was also found dead at the age of 76.
