William Basinski is an American experimental musician and composer, born in Houston, Texas, on June 25, 1958. Currently residing in Los Angeles, he is classically trained and plays the clarinet and jazz saxophone. Since 1978, he has worked with various forms of experimental media, including sound and video, primarily in New York. A key aspect of his compositional style involves the use of tape loops on reel-to-reel machines, which are also central to his live performances. His work has been released by several internationally based labels, including his own. Openly gay, Basinski cites other minimalists as his main inspiration. He is perhaps best known for his four-volume album "The Disintegration Loops" (2002–2003), which features decaying twenty-year-old tapes of his earlier music. In 2012, he composed the score for the documentary "Pursuit of Loneliness," which premiered at Sundance on January 22 of that year.
