Windy & Carl is a minimalist group formed in 1993, consisting of the husband-and-wife duo of guitarist Carl Hultgren and bassist/singer Windy Weber. Cited by Allmusic as "a leading light of the Michigan space-rock scene," the band is known for its prolific output up to 2001, after which they took a hiatus for several years. Their music draws heavily from the sounds of 1980s 4AD Records bands, particularly the work of Robin Guthrie from the Cocteau Twins, as well as other dream pop and shoegazer acts. Unlike earlier drone and ambient artists, Windy & Carl's sound is primarily created through guitar, utilizing delay effects, reverb effects, and E-Bow, rather than synthesizers, and notably lacks drums.
