Winfield Parker was born in Cooksville, Maryland. Unlike many soul artists of the 60s and 70s, he did not have a traditional musical upbringing, as he did not start his music career until he was around 16 years old, initially as a saxophone player. After playing with several local groups, he joined Little Richard's band and toured with them for a couple of years. Upon returning to Maryland, Parker began singing and was signed to Rufus Mitchell's Ru-Jac Records based in Baltimore.
