Wood Brass & Steel is an American soul funk disco group that originally started as The Ohio Hustlers. They were rebranded by Joe and recorded under the name Wood, Brass & Steel for All Platinum. The band is notable for performing on the Skull Snaps album. Their guitarist, Bernard Alexander, also known as Skip McDonald, taught at Jackie McLean's Artist Collective Inc. in Hartford, Connecticut, where their drummer Harold Sargent spent considerable time. There, they met Barton Campbell and Doug Wimbish, who had been part of a band called Organic Substance. Together, they formed a new band called Third World, but changed the name when the reggae act gained prominence, thus inheriting the name Wood, Brass & Steel. Their self-titled debut album, released in 1976 on the Turbo label, featured a couple of minor hits, including a successful cover of Ronnie Laws' "Always There" in the UK. In September 1979, Silvia Robinson recruited bassist Doug Wimbish, guitarist Skip McDonald, and drummer Keith LeBlanc as members of the in-house session musicians for her hip-hop label. Wood Brass & Steel released a final album in 1980. In 1984, the trio met a notable figure at a music seminar in New York and subsequently followed him to England, where they contributed to several projects with Sherwood.
