Wood, Brass & Steel is an American soul funk disco group that originated as The Ohio Hustlers. The group recorded under the name Wood, Brass & Steel for All Platinum, and they were also the band that played on the Skull Snaps album. The band's guitarist, Bernard Alexander, taught at Jackie McLean's Artist Collective Inc. in Hartford, Connecticut, where their drummer Harold Sargent also spent considerable time. During this period, they met Barton Campbell and Doug Wimbish, who had been part of a band called Organic Substance and were taking classes. Together, they formed a new band called Third World, but changed the name when a reggae act of the same name gained prominence, leading them to adopt Wood, Brass & Steel. Their self-titled debut album was released in 1976 on the Turbo label and featured minor hits, including a successful cover of Ronnie Laws' "Always There" in the UK. In September 1979, Silvia Robinson recruited bassist Doug Wimbish, guitarist Skip McDonald, and drummer Keith LeBlanc to become members of the in-house session musicians for her hip-hop label. Wood, Brass & Steel released a final album in 1980. In 1984, the trio met a notable figure at a music seminar in New York and later followed him to England, where they played on several projects.
