Woody Herman was an American jazz clarinetist, alto and soprano saxophonist, singer, and big band leader, born on May 16, 1913, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA. He began his musical journey in high school, playing saxophone and clarinet in the Myron Stewart Band in Milwaukee. He later joined the band of violinist Joey Lichter, where he served as a vocalist and soloist. His first significant jazz experience came when he joined a prominent orchestra, where he played for four years. Afterward, he played for other bands before ultimately joining another orchestra. When that orchestra disbanded in 1936, Herman became a key figure in the 'hot' faction of the group and, along with eight other musicians, founded his own orchestra, which became legendary for nurturing jazz talent over the decades. He remained dedicated to his orchestra until his passing on October 29, 1987, in Los Angeles, California, USA.
