Wynonie Harris was an American rhythm and blues vocalist known for his hot-n'-raunchy rock and roll style and impressive dance skills. Born on August 24, 1915, in Omaha, Nebraska, he began his career as a comedian and dancer before touring with Lucky Millinder's band. Harris recorded his first track with the band in May 1944 and later signed with Leo & Edward Mesner's label in the spring of 1945. He gained popularity in the late 1940s while recording for the King label. By the mid-1960s, he was recording on Chess and performing alongside various artists. Wynonie Harris passed away from throat cancer on June 14, 1969, in Los Angeles at the age of 53. His contributions to music have been recognized with inductions into several "Halls of Fame," including the Blues Hall of Fame in Memphis, Tennessee.
