Xalam is a renowned Senegalese band that has made a significant impact with its unique blend of jazz, rock, and African rhythms. Founded in 1965 by Sakhir Thiam, who was not only the songwriter and guitarist but also a scholar and future President of the Dakar Bourguiba University, the band initially formed as Xalam I. After their first disbandment, they were offered a position as the house band at the Sahel nightclub by wealthy businessman Ndiouga Kebe, leading them to be known as l'Orchestre du Sahel. The original lineup included musicians such as Cheikh Tidiane Tall, Djigui Diabaté, Mbaye Fall a.k.a. "Otis," Willy Sakho, Alassane Ndoye, Emmanuel Batta, Jean Ndiaye, and others. Under the leadership of their drummer, the band later reformed as Xalam II. Following the passing of Prosper Niang in 1988, the band went into a hiatus before eventually resurfacing as Xalam III.
