Xmal Deutschland was formed in Hamburg, Germany, in 1980 as an all-girl band within the Hamburg Punk scene. The original lineup included Anja Huwe (Vocals), Manuela Rickers (Guitar), Fiona Sangster (Keyboards), Rita Simon (Bass), and Caro May (Drums). They released their first single, "Großstadtindianer," in 1981 and contributed the track "Kälbermarsch" to the compilation "Lieber Zuviel Als Zuwenig." Shortly after, bassist Rita Simon was replaced by Wolfgang Ellerbrock. In 1982, they released the notable track "Incubus Succubus," and drummer Caro May was replaced by Manuela Zwingmann. Despite initial resistance from German audiences, a UK tour opening for another band led to a deal with 4AD Records. Their debut album "Fetisch" (1983) and singles "Qual" and "Incubus Succubus II" charted in the UK Independent charts, even with German lyrics. Manuela Zwingmann left the band the following year and was succeeded by Peter Bellendir, marking the longest-running lineup. In 1984, they released the album "Tocsin" and toured worldwide until 1985.
