Yazoo, known as Yaz in North America, was an English synthpop duo formed in late 1981 in Basildon, Essex. The duo consisted of a former songwriter who played synthesizer and an English singer who provided vocals. They achieved several top ten hits in the British charts during the early 1980s. Yazoo was signed to a record label that licensed them as "Yaz" for the USA. In an interview, Vince Clarke revealed that the band's name "Yazoo" was inspired by the record label.
