Yellow Magic Orchestra (YMO) is a Japanese electropop band formed in 1978, consisting of principal members Haruomi Hosono (bass), Yukihiro Takahashi (drums), and Ryuichi Sakamoto (keyboards). Initially conceived as a one-off studio project by Hosono, the band aimed to fuse orientalist exotica with modern electronics, leading to the production of their first album, which became highly popular due to its cutting-edge production. This success transformed the project into a fully fledged touring band and career for the trio. YMO is recognized as pioneers of electronic music, making extensive use of new synthesizers, samplers, and digital recording technology. Their influence extended beyond Japan, and they continue to be remixed and sampled by contemporary artists. The band ceased collaborative work in 1984, opting for the term "spreading out" rather than "splitting up," as the members returned to their solo careers while still collaborating occasionally. In 1993, they released a one-off reunion album titled "Technodon." In the early 2000s, Hosono and Takahashi reunited in a project called Sketch Show, with Ryuichi Sakamoto occasionally joining their performances and recording sessions. Sakamoto proposed renaming the project "Human Audio Sponge" during his participation, although they continued to use the Yellow Magic Orchestra name for live releases due to ownership issues with their former label.
