Yumi Matsutoya, born 荒井由実 (Arai Yumi) on January 19, 1954, in Hachioji, Tokyo, is a renowned Japanese pop and soul singer, composer, lyricist, and pianist, affectionately nicknamed Yuming (ユーミン Yūmin). She is celebrated for her distinctive voice and captivating live performances, establishing herself as a significant figure in Japanese popular music. Matsutoya's recording career has been commercially successful, with over 42 million records sold. In 1990, her album "The Gates of Heaven" became the first to be certified "2x million" by the RIAJ, and she has achieved twenty-one #1 albums on the Oricon charts. Remarkably, she is the only artist to have at least one number-one album every year on the Oricon charts for 18 consecutive years. She began her career as a session musician before debuting as a singer-songwriter in 1972 under her birth name, Yumi Arai. Her early success includes the hit "Ano Hi ni Kaeritai," which marked her first number-one spot on the Oricon charts. In 1975, she gained recognition as a composer with the song "Ichigo Hakusho wo Mou Ichido," performed by the folk duo BanBan.
