YUP, originally known as Y.U.P. (Yhdistyneet Urbaanit Puoskarit), is a Finnish progressive rock band formed in Savonlinna around 1987-1988. The founding members include Jarkko Martikainen (guitar), Valtteri Tynkkynen (bass), and Jussi Hyyrynen (drums), who were all students at the same senior high of arts. Initially, the band played a primitive style of progressive hard-core punk with English lyrics, but they shifted to Finnish lyrics and more complex music with their 1990 EP, Turpasauna. Keyboardist Tommi Kärkkäinen joined the band to help realize their evolving ideas. In 1992, Janne Mannonen took over drumming duties, leading Hyyrynen to switch to guitar. Petri Tiainen replaced Kärkkäinen on keyboards in 1994, solidifying the group's lineup. In 2009, YUP announced an indefinite hiatus to allow members to focus on other musical projects.
